In late April, we hosted a meet and greet with Mary. Check out the video of the event, and after you view it if you have any questions or wish to volunteer reach out to us!
As a retired executive I have the time and skills to contribute to the continued success of the Town of Harwich. I believe in an open democracy and in strong and open communication with the people who elected the Selectmen to represent their interests. Women are more than 50% of the population and should be represented on the Board.
Mary and her husband Bob moved to Harwich in 2005 after being longtime visitors for many years. Mary vacationed here as a child and when her parents retired to Harwich in 1979 she and Bob became even more frequent visitors.
Her professional life includes a 27 year career at Verizon beginning as a clerk in the Engineering Department and retiring as the Construction Director for a large section of Massachusetts. After a few years of retirement Mary was fortunate to be hired as the Executive Director of The Family Pantry of Cape Cod and she successfully ran that organization for 11 years. Her proudest accomplishment was opening Second Glance Thrift Shop which has been successful beyond her wildest dreams and ensures the stability of the non-profit pantry.
Mary and Bob have two children: daughter Kristen and her husband Chris who live in Holliston with their sons Andy (10) and Jack (5) and son Dan and his wife Amanda who live in Medford. All six of them can be found in Harwich regularly.
I ask for your vote for Selectman on May 18, 2021
Harwich has a number of challenges and opportunities ahead. I am excited to get to work for the community. It would be my honor to work for positive results for the people of Harwich.
The pandemic eclipses every other issue which the Town faces. The safety of all residents and businesses must be carefully managed.
At the town meeting in 2019 the town budget was passed by a very small margin which I believe is a clear message that the taxpayers want the Selectmen to pay more attention to spending. The COVID-19 pandemic has added expenses and reduces some revenues. These conditions require a serious look at all expenses. We need to budget for our needs and not necessarily all of our wants.
The seasonal economy and the prevalence of second homes makes it very difficult for people to find affordable housing which makes it very hard for businesses to operate. Cape Cod, including Harwich, will not survive and flourish without a strong plan to create affordable housing. Retirees and second home owners are not and will not be working in our restaurants, motels, grocery stores and landscape businesses to name a few.
The fragile ecosystem of our ocean and ponds needs to be protected. Coastal storms and erosion are an issue. We have begun some work on this issue but it sounds like the plan needs to be re-evaluated before spending more money. I was quite glad to see the Selectmen approve the purchase of GHD Town Wide Sewering Modeling software. From the presentation a few weeks ago it appears that this program will help the Town of Harwich make cost effective decisions driven by data.
